Make These Lifestyle Changes to Help Prevent Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in or around your anus and rectum. There are two types of hemorrhoids: external (right outside your anus) and internal (inside your rectum). Typically, external hemorrhoids are the most obvious and symptomatic since the skin outside your anus is sensitive and prone to itching and pain. 

Often, hemorrhoids go away on their own or with minimal at-home treatments. However, if you deal with hemorrhoids regularly, you may need to start making some lifestyle changes to prevent their recurrence.

Most often, hemorrhoids develop from chronic constipation, too much time spent straining during a bowel movement, or prolonged periods of sitting. All of these things affect blood flow around your rectum and anus, causing the veins to swell. 

Here are some healthy lifestyle habits you can practice to promote regular bowel movements, which should reduce your risk of hemorrhoids as a result:

Boost fiber intake 

When used with plenty of hydrating liquids, fiber can soften your stools and make them easier to pass. By reducing constipation and undue pressure, your risk for hemorrhoids should go down. Set a goal to ingest about 25-30 grams of fiber daily through fiber-rich foods or supplements. 

Prioritize exercise

Exercising for 20-30 minutes daily can help stimulate healthy bowel movements and keep you regular. Even moderate exercise, such as walking, can significantly reduce your risk of hemorrhoids. 

Listen to your body

When you feel the urge to have a bowel movement, go immediately. When you put it off, you risk stool buildup, which can lead to straining and constipation. You can also put your body on a schedule by sitting on the toilet for a few minutes at the same time every day. In many cases, this can promote healthy and regular bowel movements. 

Try a bath

Sitting in a couple of inches of lukewarm water for about 20 minutes right after having a bowel movement can soothe your skin and reduce itching around your anus. Take care to pat your anal area dry, and don’t wipe too hard.
